Mr. Kennard, I just finished reading your book, A Shepherd's Watch, and loved every page! I chose it because I am a James Herriot enthusiast and wanted a similar style/topic. Your lovely book did not disappoint! I felt connected to each of your dogs. We have a border collie and understand how truly special they are. Would love to visit Devon someday and see Borough Farm in person!

My (adult) daughter and I visited the Sheepdog and Falconry display last Wednesday. We really, genuinely enjoyed the evening. the weather was perfect, the performers were relaxed and clearly loving what they were doing and the animals were amazing, if a little unpredictable. Don't expect a slick, regimented show, this is one of the most engaging and funny shows I've seen for a long time, where anything can happen (and probably will) If you're undecided whether to attend, ponder no more! Pay your money, pull up your bale, enjoy the brilliant views and watch out for Kevin the trainee!

We've had many enjoyable evenings to see your sheepdog and falconery displays in the summer. This Easter we visited to see the lambing (5th April 2015) and we were not disappointed. A great day had by all (wonderful weather helped) and great value for money for a family day out. We found the info points on the farm walk particularly interesting and my daughters enjoyed the scavenger hunt along with holding a lamb! Thank you for opening the gates and giving us continued insight into farming life.

Best fivers worth of entertainment I've had in a long while. Nice to finally meet Mist and watch the younger dogs put through their paces. Amazing to see the distance the dogs work at and see the amount of training that has to be put in to make a top working sheepdog. Looking forward to a shepherding walk later in the year. Great location, worth waiting so long to see it!

We went on your Bluebell walk a few weeks ago. We took 5 children with us who really enjoyed themselves. It was a beautiful scenic walk through the woods with lots of interesting facts along the way. We all got to meet Mist and saw the other dogs and pups. David spoke to the children about the farm & his dogs, such a nice man. My children haven't stopped talking about it and looking at their photos. We WILL be back for sure!

We first came to a memorable display at Borough Farm on 22/08/2013 with our 15 year old son and two daughters(aged 12 and 13 years old) and our dog, Louie. We drove across from Herefordshire and enjoyed the fantastic falconry display with George and enjoyed watching Zola,Sweep and Alfie. Then watched Jake duck hearding. This year we came to a Lambing Open Day on the 19/04/2014 and had a lovely time watching the lambs been born. Our family loved seeing the puppies called Will,Wyn and Ness and also saw Mary the Pig with her piglets. We enjoyed having some pictures taken with Mist and also we went on the bluebell walk with our dog,Louie. It was well worth the visit and journeying time, as the whole family loved visiting Borough Farm. We hope to visit again in the future!!

We really enjoyed the lambing day. The farm walk was very good, we loved the wood and the buildings for the well head and ram pump. Of course William and Heidi love Mist and all the dogs. I have had to buy him a whistle not sure if he will be able to blow it, I am sure if he can we will wish he can't. It was very kind of you to round up the sheep and show us how the clamping race worked. Thank your Father for the rock cake he gave William it was very nice, as he did share it. As a farmer you never get bored of looking around someone else's farm and seeing how they do it and having a chat. Hope the rest of the lambing goes well. We will visit again. Regards John Nicola, William and Heidi

We have just watched the dvd "a year on the life of the working sheepdog" with my english circle in germany and all really enjoyed it. everyone else is german and we meet monthly to practice their english in a variety of ways. one of the group had been to your area and bought the dvd from some sheepdog trials, several years ago - so you are now well-known on the continent! this is so "english", a part of our culture that many foreigners don't know about. i was so fascinated by the dogs, despite not being a dog owner, and googled to see exactly where the farm is near exmoor. what entrepreneurs you have become - well done for such an interesting and active website. maybe we will find our way over to your corner one day...

We came across this display advertised in a local information leaflet. We were greatly impressed by both the falconry and sheepdog display. It was easy to park, the setup was friendly but professional and the animals (and owners) were very charismatic! I would recommend this to anyone - and you will learn something! The noisy kestrels, the speedy falcon, the cheeky sweep and amazing Alfie! Loved it x

What a great evening we had at the sheepdog show last Wednesday. It was the highlight of our holiday. Me and my two young daughters have watched 'Mist'on telly over the years and were very excited to visit Borough Farm. We sat on straw bales and laughed out loud when one of the dogs dashed off in the wrong direction and sat amazed when Alfie brought in two hundred sheep from a field 0.5 miles away. My daughter was thrilled to act as a duck post for Jake. 'Boss' carried it all off effortlessly and had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I was very impressed that he and Mist sat patiently at the end for all the children (and some of the parents)to have the chance to meet Mist and have a few moments with her. We'd forgotten our camera (my children nearly killed me!) but we will never forget our evening at Borough farm - thank you.

Dear Mr Kennard: At the moement I'am reading the german version of your book:"A Sheperd's Watch: Through the seasons with one man and his dogs" for the second time and I love it. I am absolutely fascinated from the description of your work as an sheperd and the dogs as well. Although your work is extremely hard work, it seems that it is worth to work for it. While I am reading the book I notice that I really miss England and the beautiful countryside. When I lived in England (only for one year) I didn't have enough time to visit Cornwall or Devon but I hope I will sometime. Thank you for giving an insight in your daily life. Best wishes from Germany, Melanie.

Hallo David and Family Just to say that I have read "A Shepherd's Watch for the third time, having bought it for Β£2.00 a couple of years ago at an Age Concern Charity Bookshop. I have loved reading about your farm, the family and, of course, the dogs. It's one of those books that is a great comfort somehow, if I'm feeling stressed! I a country girl still though a town dweller for nearly 40 years now and we've owned three wonderful border collies during that time. There were no sheep but they gave the local park and wood squirrels a hard time, especially when mother and daughter worked as a brace!!We've rehomed other dogs, too, including a German Shepherd but nothing beats the intelligence and ability to reason like a border collie. I've just discovered your wensite and am not surprised at all at how much you all at Borough Farm are loved. You've offer so many people a chance to know a life that we might all hanker after from time to time (expect for the cold and wet bits!) Congratulations and so many thanks for allowing me in. This past summer we had a local gal who raises sheep and border collies (and gives your book as a gift to friends, she's told me) out to help with our summer programs for kids. We had a great time with the kids learning about border collies, trying to herd the sheep around an arena themselves and then watching the border collies do so masterfully. Just thought you'd like to know your influence is felt across the pond and far out west as well. All the best, David Rudin

Hi, We watched the show on 22nd August at Borough Farm after seeing an advert on a tourist website. We thought the show was excellent and a lot of effort was made to make it both informative and entertaining. It really showed the working dogs in their own environment. Seeing the dogs in action, running up the fields and fetching the sheep was amazing. The shepherds hut was a great addition and we enjoyed the lovely cakes. George the falconer was informative and entertaining too. It was fantastic to meet Mist and getting her paw print was a great keepsake. Nothing can be improved in our eyes, however it did look like David needed a little help with all the children and people waiting to meet Mist. We will be recommending the show to our family and friends. Many thanks for the spectacular evening. Steve, Michelle, Emily and Edward x

We would recommend to anyone - and don't be put off by any bad weather - the show we attended had us in tiered seating (made from hay bales) in a barn which made the atmosphere even more special. Our sincere thanks to everyone involved.

Visited Borough Farm on 1st August during our holiday in Devon and had a wonderful time. The displays were well organised, interesting and very amusing. In particular my girls loved meeting Mist and Jake. This was the highlight of their holiday (and mine) and we all hope to be able to visit again next year. Thank you.

We saw the display on 25/7 with our 2 children. Our daughter was so excited to visit. Never before have I seen a dog 'mobbed' by so many excited children!! Well done Mist you are a true professional to cope with the ardent fans!

We came to watch the sheepdogs and the birds yesterday. Loved every minute of it. Glad we brought our Belgian shepherd along, I think she realised that she was probably setting her standards a little too low just trying to keep two willing adults and a headstrong springer spaniel together! Looking forward to seeing Fly in action again (next year?, I hope)

A brilliant and entertaining display @Borough farm 25/7/2012. We built our holiday around this visit and our kids have talked of nothing else all week. We were not disappointed. From being completely star struck at being waved onto the car park by 'the boss' and warmly welcomed to a stunning display of skills from animals and human alike. Seeing Jake and Mist in the flesh has made their week, and we were stunned by the peregrine falcon and Fly. Thanks to you and your family, we hope to see you again.

On Wednesday 4th July we were treated to a stunning demonstration by David Kennard and his wonderful sheepdogs. This was the highlight of my holiday. I first saw a dog working sheep in the mid 60's when Wiston Cap was competing in Hyde Park, London. Since then I have owned three border collies (or they have owned me!) David and his dogs were a joy to watch and Mist paw-printing 'pawtographs' is a lovely idea. Hope to be back next year. Helen & current B.C. Bracken.

Hi once again to you all at Borough Farm What a great night it was last Wednesday at Borough Farm. A perfect evening for an open air display and what a display we had. The new falconer George and his birds were most entertaining and what about his owls how enchanting were they? Then David you and your dogs once again thrilled us with your skills, especially Fly getting all the flock from the top field. It makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up and my eyes fill up watching her working, doing her upmost for her master. We visited last year on one of your lambing days and saw Zola and the other pups at about 8 weeks old. It was great to see her now working with the sheep. Before the display we sampled some of Debbie's cakes. I pride myself in making a good Victoria sponge but Debbie's was the best ever. Congratulations to her. Only wished we had bought more to take away. Hope you all have a successful summer. Regards Kay

Hi to all, We watched your display last wed, june 27th, and as we based our holiday on visiting mist and co!!!!!, it was brilliant, George's birds were fantastic when they started to behave themselves but so funny when they did'nt, and very imformative talk. Jake was his usual funny self with the ducks and Fly's gathering at the end was amazing, ( wish my mist could do that) Alfred and Zola "panels" have a lot to live up to and look forward to seeing them work in the future, we'll definatley be back to see you. A great show.

A special thank you must go to your young son who seemed to spend more time chasing the sheep than the sheep dogs on this particular evening!!!!!! (that is said in good spirit....we loved it all) It was an incredibly wet evening but we were sat in a barn on comfy hay bales. Uhm, hello! I just wanted to say I admire you and your dogs so much. I hope someday I can meet them. I first heard about Borough Farm when I watched Mist: The tale of a sheepdog puppy, (my favorite movie) and then all of the Sheepdog Tales. <3 I love border collies so much, and hope to someday work with them like you do. We have three dogs, Balto, a 10yr old Golden, Cooper, a kooikerhondje mix and we actually named one of our puppies, an Australian Cattle Dog x Schnauzer after Mist c: They're the best ever and we do dog agility with the two puppies. Hugs to Mist, Jakey, Fern, Ernie, Gail, Fly, Alfie, Eddie, Colin, Dart and everyone else! <3 And much love to Swift and Sir Gregory. rip.

Sorry these comments are so late; I've only just got broadband and discovered your website. Being very nervous of driving "down south" (I live in Leeds)it took something special to persuade me to venture to Devon for our summer holiday - the something special being the National Sheep Dog Trials. Having watched The Year of the Working Sheepdog and all the Mist programmes we were thrilled to discover that Borough Farm was not far from our campsite and that we were able to see one of your displays which we thoroughly enjoyed. We have a photograph, taken at the trials, in which Kevin,(my husband) holding our old Moss, is talking to you, holding Mist. It has pride of place on the living room wall and Kevin is very proud of it. As we lost Moss last year and Kevin now has cancer it is something that can not happen again and is very special to us. We now have Nell, 11 months old, and I am slowly learning how to work her with sheep. Nell is learning faster than I am but we are making progress. Thank you for some very special memories.

Hello to all at borough farm! Will, mummy, gran, grampy, and great gran all visited on easter monday. We stayed for 2 hours, despite the weather, and had a fantastic time. Will loved meeting mist and jake, and having his picture taken with them. All of the humans were very friendly and helpful too. Unfortunately we didn't get to actually see a lamb being born, but that just means we'll have to come back next year!! We are looking forward to the summer displays, and as we live just down the road in combe martin, we will probably make it to more than one! As for watching the programme, will loves it and so does mummy (I have been known to watch it when will wasmt there!) Another member of our family who loves to watch the antics of everyone at borough farm is zac, our staffie cross rescue dog! Thank you for keeping us entertained, and also educated about farm life! Good luck in the future, and we'll see you in the summer! Mummy and will Xxx

We even go to the cattle market to see if we can spot McPhereson! We've just visited a farm near us to see the lambs and she was most put out that Mist wasn't there! It is definitely his favourite programme and he loves watching not only the dogs but all the other animals as well. I have to say that I also love the programme and have to admit that Jake has had me crying with laughter on more than one occasion. Having only recently discovered Mist through a chance buying of the movie in our local supermarket, I went on to buy all of the DVD's available. My son and I have been watching them since and very very much enjoy watching the dogs work and the silly funny things they get up to. Not only do we see the wonderful dogs and hear the lovely stories, but we get to spend some quality time together while watching our favorite thing. Fabulous idea to have a kids tv show of true working dogs, absolutely love it! Would love to know if there are more dvds or series available (I have series 1-3 and the movie) It is strange to read the diary and such to see how old the dogs are now given that we only just discovered the show! And poor Swift, she was a lovely wee thing! I hope to see and read more about the dogs of Borough Farm, and have bookmarked the page in order to do so! All the best and hugs to the dogs with thanks!

We come from the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia and have had 3 Border Collies to date. Although we are city dwellers, we live close to a large park where our dogs can run leash free. Our elders border, Shelby passed away April, 2011 at age 16, and along with our 10 year old border collie, Nop, we now have an an almost 1 year old blue eyed beauty name Mist. One of our most dear Border Collie owner friend bought the original Mist video when it first cmae out and it was at that time, our 3 year old daughter determined our next dog would be named Mist. I see on line there have been subsequent Mist tales which we intend to purchase! Thank you so much for sharing your stories and it is our hope to visit your farm and meet the original Mist some day soon.

Dear David Kennard i have always been a big fan of Mist and all her adventures on borough farm. i have always tried to keep up with dates of DVD series releases and the dogs ages and ect. and i recently just watched series 3 of Mist Sheepdog Tales. in this i have regained my obsession about her again and even though i live far from devon i have always wanted to see mist, but never could and it saddens me. I also just read everything on the website and to find that mist is now 8 and is now diabetic, the fact that my all time favorite dog is getting older, as all dogs do, i know that i will never get to see her face to face. Swift was a great dog and i didnt know she passed in 2010. i dont even know if there is going to be a series 5 of mist but i wouldnt of thought so. it would be great to know that all the dogs are well, and that mist is doing fine. she is a fantastic dog and i cried knowing she was diabetic and also getting old. please reply soon sincerly Dani

I'm 26, but find Mist great entertainment, it bridges all ages! We now have a 9 week blue merle border collie, and now I have bought your DVDs, she is fascinated watching your dogs at work. I must say I love Jake, as he reminds me greatly of Glen, the working border collie at the farm across the road I used to take walks, sadly he is no longer with us, but he seems very similar nature. I hope we can get down from the Yorkshire Dales where we live to see your dogs in action at Borough Farm. Best Wishes Tom and Bernard

I was staying at the next farm to you and couldn't resist an evening watching your dogs work....they were amazing. I'm not surpised they work so well for you, you clearly adore them. I bought the books, A Shepherds Watch and Dogs of Windcutter Down and it brought back memories of my childhood of going round the farms with my Dad collecting the milk. I went every opportunity I had, for about 10 years! The winters never fazed me even though the snow was as high as the lorry and the farmers had to bring the milk to the end of the farm lanes in churns. I loved that every season brought something new. If I'm ever down your way again I'll be sure to 'come by' and watch you and your dogs again. Wishing you and your family (and dogs!) all the best, Jo

So we decided to have a daytrip from Lizard to North Devon. It was brilliant! The most impressive for me was to see how the dog/s caught the sheeps all alone over such a hughe distance. Our 6 month BC couldn't come with us, because of the strict entry regulations regarding anti-rabies inoculation... maybe this was better for the young dog πŸ™‚ thx a lot for this great evening and for the excellent cakes (carrot cake was gorgeous) and hope to see you all again.

It was our 4th visit to your farm on 3rd Aug as we always try to make your display part of our holiday at Instow. Yet again we had a great evening, it's always good to see your brilliant dogs and the falconry display. Definately worth the drive. Thanks for the insight into your life with the dogs which to us seems so idyllic, but in reality is probably jolly hard work! The new shepherds hut refreshments are a brilliant idea and the cakes were absolutely yummie! Thank you.

We would like to thank David and Mist for letting Sophie have her photo taken with them. We are delighted to have our own Mist paw print and D.V.D. We also enjoyed the delicious cakes and can't wait to come back and see you again on our next holiday. Thanks again for a great evening, Mike, Sharon and Sophie

Hi David and Family, Just wanted to leave a note to say how much we enjoyed your show on 27th July. As big fans of Mist! and having read your books it was a real treat to meet with you and see the dogs in action. Mist amazed us all with her skill of collecting the sheep from the far field. We were blessed with wonderful weather which made the evening perfect. It was fascinating to see the dedication that the dogs obviously have to their duty and their 'Boss'. Having not been to a sheep-dog trial since I was a child my interest has be reignited and we will be looking out for any local trials. Once again thankyou for the wonderful evening and I wish you all the very best for the future.

20th July 2011 - What a wonderful experience for all ages! We had such an enjoyable evening with you and cannot wait to return again. Meeting Mist was our daughter's dream come true and the photos we took just show her pleasure to perfection. Seeing Mist working just shows us how much work goes into every episode of Mist. We spent the next day at Morte Point reliving the episodes! Ella also loved the experience of handling a Harris Hawk at the age of three! We'll continue to recommend this experience to everyone we meet.

We want to return to the West Country next year and attend one of your displays at Borough Farm. Do you know if Jonathan has recovered his Golden Eagle and his Gyr Falcon? We are worried about the lost birds. Again, thanks for providing us with a wonderful time this week at the Dunster display. Jim and Leslie Freeman Arundel, West Sussex

I especially loved seeing Jake and must admit I cried when I saw him as he is the spitting image of one of our beloved Collies that we lost in April. All the dogs where fantastic, you and your family were all so welcoming even though the weather was awful. It was an experience that my husband and I won't forget and will be back again next year to hopefully see Colin taking his turn. Thanks again keep up the good work and good luck in any forthcoming trials. The Hangers x

We visited on the 14th and enjoyed it so much we came back on the 15th. We especially enjoyed meeting all the pups and are glad they have all settled in new homes. We knew Colin would end up stopping at Borough Farm - he's just so cute!! I am sure Colin and Zola will grow to be fine sheepdogs. Hope to visit in the Summer.

We too raise Border Collies and have experienced some of the same situations in ranching or farming as you would put it. Wish I was there to have helped you rope that lamb on the cliffs, I am a pretty good roper as I have done so for about 30 + years with cattle and some sheep. Good luck with your farm and hope to get over to that past of the world soon. Harold

Ever since I bought my first B.C. I have wanted to take herdong classes and teach my dog how to herd. However, my first dog, Glynn, had absolutely no interest in herding. ( I put him on sheep when he was 18 months.) Then I rescued an amazingly lovely dog, Brody, who was too old and injured to even think of putting to sheep. I now am the proud owner of another B.C. who has from the getgo had the 'eye'. It wasn't intil he was 5 years that I was able to find a herding class, close by to take him to, to see if indeed he is able to be trained as a sheep dog. The lady that runs the class is amazed at how good he is. We have had 3 classes (once a week, and no place to practice) For 15 years I have wanted to learn how to train my B.C. how to herd, so it is with a great deal of excitement that I am taking this class. Your book has helped my to read my dog better and to understand how to guide him to do the job he and I are eager to learn. I will turn 70 on my next birthday and my greatest hope is that I will become a 'shepherd' before I die!! Thank you for such a beautiful book. Patricia PS. I live in Florida, so your book has been bought by the local library!

I have just found this page and think it is brilliant. I didn't think that Borough Farm was the real name of the farm and am shocked. I am glad that you have put on about the dogs, my kids and my husband and me love the tv series that has been on 5 and infact we have just bought a border collie puppy that they have named Mist after the program to replace our 12 year old dog that we lost last year, I'm hoping to train her to fetch the cows. I'm sorry to hear about Swift. I hope that you do follow on the series, Mist is the kids favourite dog, but I think that Jake is brilliant and he reminds of Bob (another collie that we had years ago) he was a big kid and used to fetch branches to throw rather than sticks

We'll definitely be looking for the others in the series! My Mum grew up in a village in Somerset. I love listening to the dogs and other animals (and the "boss"!) speak with the local accent. It was a fantastic afternoon and for us 'townies' it is a rare treat to spend an afternoon watching a different type of industry in action. The dogs were fantastic and David's entertaining character adds to the event. We were also really chuffed that we got to walk around your farm and learn more about your lifestyle and sheep farming in North Devon. Long may you continue to be successful with both sheep farming and sharing your experiences with the rest of us. Shan x

As with an earlier comment, we thought the sheepdog display was on its own excellent value for money, the falconry was fascinating and an added bonus. Thank you for an absolutely wonderfull display last wednesday. The charm of the television programme was replicated ten fold in the reality. The boss himself welcomed us with a beaming smile and natural charm. You have managed to retain the feeling of a pastime shared as if we were friends just calling by, with a cup of tea and delicious home made cake, the whole show managed by the family. How refreshing! The falconry was good too, but the Mist show would stand on it's own at the same price - that's what we all came to see. The 400 mile day round trip was worth it despite the rain. Love to all the dogs and the Kennard family.

Magical. That one word describes how we all felt about our recent visit on the 18th August - to see Jake. I know we should put Mist at the top of the list but we really came to see Jake at work ....or play !! Mist is very special of course but there is something about Jakey boy that just keeps us all laughing and even without the voiceover - his unique character came shinning through whilst he rounded up the ducks during the show. We live a long way away and there are lots of miles between our home and the farm but the memory of our visit will stay with us for many years to come. Long life and good health to the wonderful people and collies, sheep and ducks at Borough Farm. From Rheanna Morgan and her Mummy and Daddy (Jake's biggest fans!!)

A truely fantastic evening. Abbi my 2 and a half year old is a total Mist fan, so when we found out we could see her in action we had to come. A brilliant evening, fun for all ages. Would come back again and again! Thank you all (humans and dogs) for making such a great evening out, the real highlight of her holiday! Now home, Abbi wont stop watching her dvds! Well done! xxx

Thank you so much for a great evening of education and entertainment. We have been coming to Devon for a number of years, but this was the first time we had heard of you. We have put a recommendation about you in the guestbook where we stayed. See you again!

Stayed for a week at Woolacombe and missing our sheep dogs in Wales decided to visit the display. It turned out to be the highlight of the holiday. My dad has also read both of the books and couldn't put them down. Thanks for a great evening. The tea and homemade cakes went down a treat too !!!

Dear David and family, We would like to express our sincere sympathy for the sad loss of Swift. She was clearly a special dog who had a special talent. We have many treasured memories of her and lots of video and photos which we have taken during our visits to your displays. Kindest regards Andrew, Judith, Toby & Storm(our border collie)

We had an absolutely brillaint time at Borough Farm on Wed 21st July. We made mummy book our holiday in Devon so we could come and visit (all the way from Liverpool) and we loved meeting Fly,Alfie Jake Mist and Eddie. we stayed really late whey past our bedtimes and loved every minute, we went past the entrance to the farm several times more that week and kept asking to come again, but mum said that the dogs were out working in the fields! maybe next year......oh yes and the birds of prey were good too and I enjoyed holding a kestrel and taking part in the show with Jake and the holding a harris hawk.

I have been to the displays twice at Dunster and will be going again this year, with my small grand children. I am lucky enough to live on Exmoor. David and Mist also came to our W.I. (Cutcombe) last year, along with Mist. Our members were thrilled with the visit, a very entertaining evening. I have all the books and dvds and am a huge fan. Our little ones really love the dogs. The wonderful thing about David,is his empathy with and very genuine love and respect for his animals. It just shines through all the time! What a fabulous life his dogs enjoy! So sorry to learn of Swift passing on- you must all miss her very much. What a great legacy she has left.
